Stan Milosevic's Theocratic Library

These are my recommendations for books that we can add to our personal theocratic libraries. The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society has provided much Bible study material for us that will help save our lives, make us grow spiritually strong, and assist us in becoming mature Christians. The books listed here are extra reading material that we, as Jehovah's Witnesses, might enjoy. They are positive and upbuilding and pertain to our history, beliefs, and way of life, both from the point of view of our brothers and secular writers. The list also contains books that have been referenced by the Society in some meaningful way. I have all of these books in my own library and have enjoyed them immensely and I can conscientiously recommend each and every one of them.

I have indicated whether each book was written by a brother or not at the time that the book was released and other pertinent information about the book. Some of the authors may no longer be Witnesses but at the time their books were written they were in good standing so their books are still included on the list. The books are presented in no particular order. Many have inquired whether these books can be purchased from me. I am not offering any of the books on the list for sale, however most of the titles have links to where you can purchase the books if so desired. As I acquire other books and items they will be listed near the top of the page or under the appropriate heading. If you have any titles that you have read and think could be added to this list please let me know, I'm always on the look out for new books. Happy reading!

Assyrian, Babylonian, Egyptian, and Persian Chronology
compared with the chronology of the Bible Volume II
Assyrian, Babylonian, and Egyptian Chronology
Author: Rolf Furuli Year Published: 2006 Is the author a Witness: Yes
Publisher: Awatu Publishers Pages: 251 ISBN: 9788299463362
The conclusion drawn in volume II is that the New Babylonian Empire should be expanded by twenty years. This means that Nebuchadnezzar II started to reign in 624 and not in 604 B.C.E., as is almost universally believed. The New Assyrian and the Egyptian empires are pushed back twenty years as well. As a basis for the aforementioned conclusions the following subjects are discussed:
• Cuneiform tablets used as evidence for the traditional chronology are analyzed.
• Contracts and royal inscriptions that suggest an expansion of the New Babylonian Empire are analyzed.
• More than 60 pages are used for an analysis of VAT 4956. The conclusion is that the lunar data on the tablet better fit 588 than 568 B.C.E., and that this is the 37th year of Nebuchadnezzar II.
• The few other astronomical tablets relevant to the New Babylonian chronology are discussed.
• The many tablets from the last twenty years of the New Assyrian Empire that contradict each other are discussed.
• The values of the New Assyrian astronomical reports are assessed.
• Problems with the Assyrian Epynom lists are pointed out.
• The reigns of the Assyrian kings and their chronology are compared with the chronology of the kings of Judah.

A New Understanding of the Verbal System of Classical Hebrew
An Attempt to Distinguish Between Semantic and Pragmatic Factors
Author: Rolf Furuli Year Published: 2006 Is the author a Witness: Yes
Publisher: Awatu Publishers Pages: 508 ISBN: 8299463343
For the first time all the 79,574 finite and infinite verbs the Tanakh, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Ben Sira, and the Inscriptions have been analyzed in the same study. The description of the Hebrew verbal system in this study is completely new and different from any previous descriptions, both regarding the nature of each conjugation and the definition of the different forms. In the chapters of the book, 2,106 Hebrew passages with 4,261 verbs (1,402 wayyiqtols, 887 yiqtols, 78 weyiqtols, 769 qatals, 315 weqatals, 280 infinitives, and 530 participles) have been discussed and analyzed.

The analysis of all these verb forms reveals that yiqtol, wayyiqtol, weyiqtol, qatal, and weqatal can have past, present, and future reference. Thus, a strong case is made against the view that tense is grammaticalized in classical Hebrew. As for aspect, the data show that each of the mentioned finite verb forms can signal incomplete and complete(d) actions. So a strong case can also be made against the view that the Hebrew conjugations represent aspects in the traditional definition of the word (exemplified by English aspects).

This book represents a new approach to the study of the verbal system of classical Hebrew. Its aim is to find quality rather than quantity, and this means that the focus is on finding the semantic meaning (uncancellable meaning) of the different parts of the Hebrew verbal system, in contrast with conversational pragmatic implicature.

The Non-Christian Cross
Author: John Denham Parsons Year Published: 2006 Is the author a Witness: No
Publisher: The Echo Library Pages: 100 ISBN: 978-1847027160
FROM THE PREFACE: The history of the symbol of the cross has had an attraction for the author ever since, as an enquiring youth, he found himself unable to obtain satisfactory answers to three questions concerning the same which presented themselves to his mind.

The first of those questions was why John the Baptist, who was beheaded before Jesus was executed, and so far as we are told never had anything to do with a cross, is represented in our religious pictures as holding a cross.

The second question was why, despite the fact that the instrument of execution to which Jesus was affixed can have had but one shape, almost any kind of cross is accepted as a symbol of our faith.

The last of the three questions was why many varieties of the cross of four equal arms, which certainly was not a representation of an instrument of execution, were accepted by Christians as symbols of the Christ before any cross which could possibly have been a representation of an instrument of execution was given a place among the symbols of Christianity.

Pursuing these matters for himself, the author eventually found that even before our era the cross was venerated by many as the symbol of Life; though our works of reference seldom mention this fact, and never do it justice. He moreover discovered that no one has ever written a complete history of the symbol, showing the possibility that the stauros or post to which Jesus was affixed was not cross-shaped, and the certainty that, in any case, what eventually became the symbol of our faith owed some of its prestige as a Christian symbol of Victory and Life to the position it occupied in pre-Christian days.

The Trinity's Weak Links Revealed
Author: Robert L. George Year Published: 2007 Is the author a Witness: Yes
Publisher: iUniverse Pages: 169 ISBN: 9780595442881

The Trinity doctrine of Christendom has long been defined as the 'Unbreakable Chain.' The hub of Christendom claims this teaching to be the "central doctrine of the Christian religion." Presbyterian Pastor, Philip W. Butin states: "The Trinity is the heart and center of Christian faith." Similarly, Protestant Theologian Dr. James R. White remarks: "We hang a person's very salvation upon the acceptance of the doctrine . we must know, understand, and love the Trinity to be fully and completely Christian." On the other hand, many in Christendom readily admit the complete opposite. Jesuit Edmund Fortman says: "There is no evidence that any sacred writer even suspected the existence of a [Trinity] within the Godhead . New Testament writers . give us no formal or formulated doctrine of the Trinity." Anglican Priest, Tom Harpur admits: "You simply cannot find the doctrine of the Trinity set out anywhere in the Bible." Hence, there is obvious disagreement and disunity amongst Trinitarians themselves. The reasons for their confusion are revealed through the uncovering of 'weak links' located in the Trinity Chain. Is Jesus Christ the 'second person' of God? Is Jesus Jehovah? The inspired word of God, the Bible, will reveal the answers in this book.

KNOCKING takes an unprecedented, inside look at how Jehovah's Witnesses have intersected with society beyond the doorstep.

By fighting for their right to live and worship as they choose, Jehovah's Witnesses won legal victories that protected civil liberties and free choice for all Americans. By refusing blood transfusions, but insisting on medical care, Jehovah's Witnesses risked their lives in pursuit of new bloodless technology now used on all types of patients. By resisting Hitler and his Nazi army, German Jehovah's Witneses were sent to the concentration camps to become martyrs during the Holocaust.

KNOCKING tells a story of full dimension: controversy, criticism, integrity, inspiration.

Facing The Lion: Memoirs of a Young Girl in Nazi Europe
ABRIDGED EDITION
Author: Simone Arnold Liebster Year Published: 2004 Is the author a Witness: Yes
Publisher: Grammaton Press, LLC Pages: 192 ISBN: 0967936691
Facing The Lion is the autobiographical account of a young girl's faith and courage. In the years immediately preceding World War II, Simone Arnold is a young girl who delights in life - her doting parents, her loving aunts and uncles, and her grandparents at their mountain farm in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France. As Simone grows into her pre-teen years, her parents turn from the Catholic Church and become devout Jehovah's Witnesses. Simone, too, embraces the faith.

The Nazi part (the "Lion") takes over Alsace-Lorraine, and Simone's schools become Nazi propaganda machines. Simone refuses to accept the Nazi party as being above God. Her simple acts of defiance lead her to become persecuted by the school staff and local officials, and ignored by friends.

With her father already taken away to a Nazi concentration camp, Simone is wrestled away from her mother and sent to a reform school to be "reeducated". There, Simone learns that her mother has also been put in a camp. Simone remains in the harsh reform school until the end of the war. She emerges feeling detached from life, but the faith that sustains her through her ordeals helps her rebuild her world.

Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy
Author: Kevin Bales Year Published: 2004 Is the author a Witness: No
Publisher: University of California Press Pages: 324 ISBN: 978-0520243842

No, University of Surrey lecturer Bales isn't reporting on wage slavery: the stories that slip into the newspaper now and then about workers in sneaker or soccer ball factories in Indonesia or Vietnam earning 20 cents or $1 a week. Bales means 27 million people held in chattel slavery, debt bondage, or contract slavery: "enslaved by violence and held against their wills for purposes of exploitation." Their masters he calls "slaveholders" because they don't claim to own their victims; they control their victims' lives and mobility and gain enormous profits from their labor. Bales investigated five case studies--prostitution in Thailand, water delivery in Mauritania, charcoal making in Brazil, brickmaking in Pakistan, and bonded labor in Indian agriculture--to trace the nature of modern slavery and compare its forms. Three factors explain the new slavery: the population explosion; economic globalization and modernized agriculture; and "the chaos of greed, violence, and corruption created by this economic change in many developing countries." Globalization ties us all to the new slavery, and Bales suggests what the reader can do.

Concepts of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
Author: Matthew Alfs Year Published: 1984 Is the author a Witness: Yes
Publisher: Old Theology Book House Pages: 104 ISBN: 978-0961296407

Matthew Alfs has produced a unique and objective work that illuminates both Trinitarian and Non-Trinitarian concepts of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Alfs' work is not only helpful because it clearly states the major symbola of Christendom, but the study also lucidly defines key terms of Trinitarianism. Of course, Alfs is not content to interpret Trinitarian concepts on his own; rather, he quotes profusely from those who espouse the said tenets.

Alfs provides definitions of nomenclature such as "Essence," "substance," "nature," "relation" and "subsistence" from authoritative sources. He systematically unfolds the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Trinitarian concepts. We are treated to an illuminating discussion of eternal generation as it pertains to the Son over against eternal spiration of the Holy Spirit. Alfs argues that Trinitarian dogma does not allow for subordination among the TREIS hUPOSTASEIS or TRES PERSONAE. He cites a few Catholic theologians to buttress his point.

In the second part of the study, Alfs unfolds non-Trinitarian groups. He discusses Jehovah's Witnesses, the Church of God, the Unitarians, Christadelphians and other groups. His book is well-written and very objective. This book contains scholarly references in the back matters and an index. It is a requisite tool for exploring Trinitarian and non-Trinitarian concepts.

Holocaust Politics
Author: John K. Roth Year Published: 2001 Is the author a Witness: No
Publisher: Westminster John Knox Press Pages: 354 ISBN: 978-0664221737

More than half a century after Nazi Germany's genocidal assault on the Jewish people, the Holocaust grips our attention as never before, raising hotly-debated questions: How is the Holocaust best remembered? What are its lessons? Who gets to answer those questions? Who owns the Holocaust? Those issues provoke disagreements that can be cutthroat or constructive. Taking its point of departure from the controversy that swirled around John Roth's aborted appointment as director of the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, a senior post at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., Holocaust Politics shows how contemporary attitudes and priorities compete to determine that all-important difference.

Remembering: Voices of the Holocaust
Author: Lyn Smith Year Published: 2005 Is the author a Witness: No
Publisher: Carol & Graf Publishers Pages: 351 ISBN: 978-0786719228

Smith, who has recorded the experiences of survivors for London's Imperial War Museum, weaves together more than 100 accounts to construct a narrative of Nazi persecutions from the first anti-Semitic measures in 1933 through the liberation of the concentration camps. Atrocities, cruelties and random acts of kindness are recounted, fueled by a fierce need to preserve the truth for future generations. The strength of this collection is deepened by the inclusion of the experiences of Jehovah's Witnesses, Gypsies, members of German police battalions and resistance fighters. The most horrific anecdotes evoke the suffering of German, Polish and Czech Jews in overcrowded ghettos and extermination centers, somehow managing to outwit and, against all odds, overcome the final solution by luck and their persistent will to live. This is an extraordinary work of scholarship and a reminder of the power of individual stories, which can bring home the horrors of WWII more forcefully than abstract numbers.

Serving Jehovah in Colombia
Author: Hal Lammel Year Published: 2005 Is the author a Witness: Yes
Publisher: Xlibris Pages: 75 ISBN: 1599267152

This is a brother's account of his assignment as an International Volunteer Construction Worker in Colombia. From the back cover of the book:

"I will never forget that huge tree growing out of a prominent boulder. One could see it from a distance and it towered, no it loomed over the construction site. It provided protection from the blazing sun, it was a place of peace and serenity. I had never seen anything like that, why it seemed impossible....a tree with no apparent watering source, prospering, branches reaching out inviting one to come and sit under its sheltering boughs.. As amazing as that seemed it did something else for me, it seemed to set the spirit of the project. It was the first thing one noticed upon arrival and I always gave it one last look on returning to my living quarters. With the sun setting over it’s majestic branches it was something to see, beautiful and serene. It imprinted itself upon my mind and it seemed to represent what was going on right there in this very special place high up in the Andes. This project had no visible source of support, yet here it was growing daily, it’s red tiled roofs looming over all the surrounding territory and upon completion it will provide comfort, hope and shelter from this troublesome world through the inspired printed word of God."

Angelomorphic Christology and the Exegesis of Psalm 8:5 in Tertullian's Adversus Praxean: An Examination of Tertullian's Reluctance to Attribute Angelic Properties to the Son of God
Author: Edgar G. Foster Year Published: 2006 Is the author a Witness: Yes
Publisher: University Press of America Pages: 126 ISBN: 0761833145

Angelomorphic Christology and the Exegesis of Psalm 8:5 in Tertullian's Adversus Praxean explores the reluctance of Tertullian of Carthage (160-220 A.D.) to predicate angelic properties of the Lord Jesus Christ. This fresh and insightful work suggests that one reason for this aversion to angelic or angelomorphic Christology was his hermeneutical approach to Psalm 8:5.

Edgar G. Foster earned his B. A. in Philosophy and Classical Languages at Lenoir-Rhyne College. He subsequently completed his M.Th. work at the University of Glasgow. Foster is now finishing his doctoral work at the University of Glasgow in Theology and Religious Studies. He is also one of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Divine Truth or Human Tradition?: A Reconsideration of the Roman Catholic-protestant Doctrine of the Trinity in Light of the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures
Author: Patrick Navas Year Published: 2006 Is the author a Witness: No
Publisher: Authorhouse Pages: 588 ISBN: 1425948324
Navas presents one of the best books on this subject for some years. He exposes the creeds and considers the arguments of Trinitarian apologists, many who conceed the doctrine of the Trinity is not only man-made but entirely unscriptural. He appeals to logic, reason, and most importantly, to the Holy Scriptures. He tackles the small handful of questionable scriptures in their Biblical and historical context, showing how they all harmonize with the one truth that Jesus never claimed to be God and is never portrayed as one person of a mysterious three-person godhead.

There are sections on all the key problem texts - John 1:1,18 - John 10:30 - Philippians 2 - Hebrews 1 - Colossians 1 - Colossian 2:9 - Acts 20:28 - Romans 9:5 - Titus 2:13 - 1 John 5:20 - the 'I am' texts, and many more. Navas refers to Jason BeDuhn's Book and upholds the New World Tranlsation, refuting such critics as Bowman and others, and using many quotations from Trinitarian scholars. There is a fine section discussing the Holy Spirit, and an Appendix on the value of the Tetragrammaton.

Navas is not a Witness, so the book is all the stronger for that, but the book includes a section written by Brother Solomon Landers on the Copitic translation of John 1:1c.

In this first volume of memoirs covering 1996-1998 Struan Hamilton gives the reader an insight into the real lives of ordinary Russians, both Witnesses and non-Witnesses, as they come to grips with the new post-Soviet inheritance. The Histories
Author: Tacitus Year Published: 1997 Is the author a Witness: No
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA Pages: 360 ISBN: 0192831585

Every now and then a pivotal moment in history is witnessed and recorded by a master communicator. The mid-first century of Rome was such a time and Tacitus was such a communicator. The Histories will forever be a benchmark of good history with its observations on human nature and behaviour along with their impact on history. The historian will do well to read Tacitus not just for the historical lessons but for his approach to history as a record of human activity. While observing and commenting on the human element in history, Tacitus avoids making moral judgements and remains as objective as possible in the midst of turmoil, wars, and rumors of wars. His beloved nation and people were suffering under the barbarity of fratricidal war yet he remains above the madness and records the events with passion tempered with objectivity. His example is one that has remained difficult for others to follow.

In this vivid and captivating autobiography, Hermine Schmidt describes her happy childhood years in the city of Danzig. Her adolescence is shattered when the Nazis take over the city and arrest her because of her religious beliefs as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. After a harrowing "trial" before a Nazi judge, Hermine is sent to the Stutthof concentration camp, where she endures and witnesses unspeakable horrors.

During years of persecution and Nazi captivity, Hermine Schmidt found emotional shelter in her positive outlook and firm faith in God. Hers is a story of unforgettable optimism.

Death Always Came on Mondays
Author: Horst Schmidt Year Published: 2005 Is the author a Witness: Yes
Publisher: Gamma Books Pages: 160 ISBN: 8799012545
In this touching and thoughtful autobiography, Horst Schmidt describes his life as a conscientious objector in Nazi Germany. As one of Jehovah's Witnesses, he refused to join Hitler's forces. Instead, he went underground with the Gestapo in hot pursuit. While travelling incognito with the banned publications of his religion he met his future wife, Hermine, in Danzig. Both were arrested. She was sent to a concentration camp, and he was sentenced to death by the People's Court, Nazi Germany's highest court.

The reader also gains insight into Horst's foster-mother Emmy Zehden's remarkable life. In 1944 Emmy Zehden was executed in Berlin-Ploetzensee for hiding her son and other conscientious objectors. A street leading to the former place of execution has been named after her and now bears the name "Emmy Zehden Way."

The book has been edited by the historian Dr Hans Hesse, who since 1995 has studied Jehovah's Witnesses in Germany. Dr Hesse has added a fine section about the Nazi persecution of Jehovah's Witnesses in which he points out that after the war, the new Federal Republic of Germany included the right to conscientious objection in its Constitution, largely due to the example set by Jehovah's Witnesses.

A MESSAGE FROM THE TRANSLATOR: “My goal was to write a translation that people would look forward to using, something easy-to-read and easy to understand. It is to that end that I continue to revise and improve it, even though it is finished for all practical purposes. My sincere desire is that the New Simplified Bible will be used to help people learn the Truth from the Holy Scriptures and assist them to draw closer to our loving God, Jehovah".

"Why did you write another Bible translation?" That is a very good question since there are many fine translations available in English today. But nearly all of them are Trinitarian Biased! Darwin's Black Box
Author: Michael J. Behe Year Published: 1996 Is the author a Witness: No
Publisher: Free Press Pages: 329 ISBN: 0743290313

Michael J. Behe, a biochemist at Lehigh University, presents here a scientific argument for the existence of God. Examining the evolutionary theory of the origins of life, he can go part of the way with Darwin--he accepts the idea that species have been differentiated by the mechanism of natural selection from a common ancestor. But he thinks that the essential randomness of this process can explain evolutionary development only at the macro level, not at the micro level of his expertise. Within the biochemistry of living cells, he argues, life is "irreducibly complex." This is the last black box to be opened, the end of the road for science. Faced with complexity at this level, Behe suggests that it can only be the product of "intelligent design."

Going through the 2005 Watchtower Library I listed and notated 10 references by the Society to Behe's book. He was quoted at length in Awake, May 8,1997 and interviewed in the September 2006 Awake discussing creation

God's, Graves, and Scholars
Author: C.W. Ceram Year Published: 1967 Is the author a Witness: No
Publisher: Book Club Assoiates Pages: 441 ISBN: 0575006617

C.W. Ceram visualized archeology as a wonderful combination of high adventure, romance, history and scholarship, and this book, a chronicle of man's search for his past, reads like a dramatic narrative. We travel with Heinrich Schliemann as, defying the ridicule of the learned world, he actually unearths the remains of the ancient city of Troy. We share the excitement of Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter as they first glimpse the riches of Tutankhamen's tomb, of George Smith when he found the ancient clay tablets that contained the records of the Biblical Flood. We rediscover the ruined splendors of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the wonders of the ancient wold; of Chichen Itza, the abandoned pyramids of the Maya: and the legendary Labyrinth of tile Minotaur in Crete. Here is much of the history of civilization and the stories of the men who rediscovered it.

The Secret of the Hittites
Author: C. W. Ceram Year Published: 1956 Is the author a Witness: No
Publisher: Alfred A. Knopf Pages: 281 ISBN: NA

The author of the acclaimed Gods, Graves, and Scholars tells the dramatic tale of the Hittites, an Indo-European people who became a dominant power in the Middle East. Their struggle in Egypt with Ramses II for control of Syria led to one of the greatest battles of the ancient world. The fall of the Hittite empire was sudden, and historical records were scarce--until the discovery of cuneiform tablets yielded a rich store of information on which this work is based. "...a saga richly charged with dramatic twists and with enthralling accounts of scholarly detective work."

Tacitus - The Annals of Imperial Rome
Author: Tacitus Year Published: 1996 Is the author a Witness: No
Publisher: Penguin Classics Pages: 455 ISBN: 0140440607
Tacitus (Cornelius), famous Roman historian, was born in AD 55, 56 or 57 and lived to about 120. He became an orator, married in 77 a daughter of Julius Agricola before Agricola went to Britain, was quaestor in 81 or 82, a senator under the Flavian emperors, and a praetor in 88. After four years' absence he experienced the terrors of Emperor Domitian's last years and turned to historical writing. He was a consul in 97. Close friend of the younger Pliny, with him he successfully prosecuted Marius Priscus. The Annals, Tacitus's great work, originally covering the period AD 14–68 (Emperors Tiberius, Gaius, Claudius, Nero) and published between 115 and about 120. Tacitus is renowned for his development of a pregnant concise style, character study, and psychological analysis, and for the often terrible story which he brilliantly tells. As a historian of the early Roman empire he is paramount.

Herodotus - The Histories
Author: Herodotus Year Published: 2003 Is the author a Witness: No
Publisher: Penguin Classics Pages: 784 ISBN: 0140449086
"The father of history," as Cicero called him, and a writer possessed of remarkable narrative gifts, enormous scope, and considerable charm, Herodotus has always been beloved by readers well-versed in the classics. Compelled by his desire to "prevent the traces of human events from being erased by time," Herotodus recounts the incidents leading up to the Persian Wars and the Greeks' stunning victory over the more powerful invading Persian forces. But Herotodus gives us much more than military history. By employing multiple points of view and incorporating the diverse stories he collected during his extensive travels, Herotodus provides the fullest portrait of the classical world of the 5th and 6th centuries. And because he writes in a style highly susceptible to digression, his book includes all manner of marvelous observations. Most importantly, throughout The Histories Herotodus shows us the ruin that comes to those who overreach their natural boundaries, who fail to heed sensible warnings or act without understanding the web of reciprocity that connects all things.

The Complete Works of Josephus
Author: Flavius Josephus Year Published: 1980 Is the author a Witness: No
Publisher: Hendrickson Publishers Pages: 800 ISBN: 0913573868

Flavius Josephus (c. A.D. 37-100), born Joseph be Matthias, was a Jew of an aristocratic family and Pharisaic adherence. He became a priest and in A.D. 64 he pleaded before Nero in Rome to release some priestly friends from bondage. When the Jewish revolt began in A.D 66, he became commander of a Jewish force in Galilee. After his capture by the Romans at Jotapata, Josephus urged his fellow compatriots to surrender. He then went to Rome with Titus where he began his literary activity, became a Roman citizen, and took the family name of Flavius, after the surname of the Roman emperor, Titus in whose mansion he lived.

This fascinating history will guide you through all the long corridors of Jewish experience, beginning with the Creation down to the time of the Roman emperor, Titus, who with his Roman legions subdued Jerusalem during the first century of the Christian era. Josephus remains the primary extra-biblical reference for biblical studies and archaeology.

Unbroken Will: The Extraordinary Courage of an Ordinary Man
Author: Bernhard Rammerstorfer Year Published: 2004 Is the author a Witness: Yes
Publisher: Grammaton Press Pages: 202 ISBN: 0967936640
For decades nobody wanted to hear about the life and suffering of Leopold Engleitner. He was born in 1905 in Strobl, his reputation was not good because he was a survivor of concentration camps and, in addition, he was one of Jehovah's Witness. Bernhard Rammerstorfer was paying attention. He published a book about the life of Mr. Engleitner and now attention is being paid at home and abroad to those two men from Upper Austria. The book "Unbroken Will - The Extraordinary Courage of an Ordinary Man" has become a recognized historic and educational document on the fate of Nazi resistance fighters. Having done outstanding detailed research Mr. Rammerstorfer succeeded to portray the life of a human being that has lived the entire 20th century in full consciousness. The book describes a life that was marked by a 4-year odyssey through three concentration camps and escape from the Nazi authorities. Shortly after the seizure of power by the National Socialists, the Gestapo started to persecute Jehovah's Witnesses as enemies of the state because of their unconditional objection to serve in the military. "I was arrested by the Gestapo in April 1939 in Bad Ischl, in October I was sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp" recalls the Nazi victim."Forced labor, abuses from which he still suffers today, hunger and the threat of death were part of his everyday life. Finally, in July 1943 Mr. Engleitner returned to his home weighing only 63 pounds. However, the Nazi military would not let go: shortly before the war ended he was drafted once again for the military. He escaped and hid in caves and cabins in the mountains. Bernhard Rammerstorfer recounts the story of a man who was cruelly victimized by the Nazis for his refusal to serve in the German Wehrmacht. Leopold Engleitner's life story is presented in the Watchtower May 1, 2005

The Lord and the Tetragrammaton
Author: Howard Mazzaferro Year Published: 2004 Is the author a Witness: Yes
Publisher: Self Published Pages: 62 ISBN: NA

When our New Testament portion of the Bible was being written by men such as Matthew, Mark, Luke, and others, they quoted from the Hebrew Scriptures hundreds of times in their writings. Many of these quotations include places where the Tetragrammaton occurred. One would think that when these NT (New Testament) writers quoted from the Old Testament that they would have quoted all the words from the Sacred Scriptures including God’s personal name. If they did this, our New Testament Scriptures would contain the Tetragrammaton. However, this has not currently been the case. No New Testament manuscript copies we have today include the Tetragrammaton. We have a mystery here. The mystery is that God’s personal name appears in Old Testament verses thousands of times, then years later, these same verses in the New Testament mysteriously no longer contain God’s personal name. Something Happened! The Lord and the Tetragrammaton will help solve this mystery.

To Touch The Leper
Author: Timothy Galfas II Year Published: 2005 Is the author a Witness: Yes
Publisher: Gramma Books Pages: 80 ISBN: 8799012553
The title of this collection of poems is drawn from the Gospel account of Jesus’ healing a leper. The first century rules in Judah required the leper to shout his presence so everyone would avoid him. No matter how much they loved him, no one was to touch him. However, Jesus of Nazareth became the first human to touch him in perhaps twenty years! The touch came first. The healing followed. Humans need touch. And touch demonstrated living mercy. Today we humans designate “lepers” for ourselves. We exclude people from our fellowship. We do it privately. We do it as communities. With well-intended and well explained rules, we create the outcasts and pariahs. We divide ourselves into languages and nations. We cut lines on maps and invent countries. We set levels of society by wealth or fame or power or education or birth. Then, to assure division we invented race and sub-races and races within races so that someone will always have something to divide fellow humans from each other. But biology teaches that we share a common origin. Such an origin shrieks that we have shared ancestors. Shared ancestry is the root of family. And family is what the human race, biologically, must come to understand about itself. However, to accept our race’s brotherhood eclipses biology. It insists on a universal paternal source, a central Intelligence, a Creator. Fundamental to Christian belief is Jesus’ death as a ransom for humanity. The teaching that accompanied his sacrificial act included requirements for love. On the other hand, Jesus was not naive. He knew the best-intentioned love could not prevent our hurting each other, sometimes seriously. Forgiveness was, therefore, essential to love’s maintenance. While these poems are works of imagination, they explore realities as spectator and participant. They look through the leper’s eyes and the healer’s heart. They try to understand the feelings of those of us who live, for the most part, in the great in between, neither forgivers nor healers. May the music of the verse help the reader find and strengthen something of the ideals resident in all of us.

Voices of a Troubled Century
Author: Michael Bjørk Year Published: 2005 Is the author a Witness: Yes
Publisher: Gramma Books Pages: 64 ISBN: 8799012510

The twentieth century was indeed a troubled century. No single book of facts can adequately capture the total spirit of hope and despair, achievement and failure of that century. Realizing this, the Danish writer Michael Bjørk resorted to poetry. In this collection of poems in English he gives voice to a number of characters, some imagined, some real, who took center stage during that dramatic century. Seeing the year 1914 as the century’s true beginning (a view shared by historians like Eric Hobsbawm), Michael Bjørk takes his reader from Sarajevo and on through wars and persecutions, from Auschwitz to Lockerbie, allows him to listen to Gagarin, Presley, Monroe, Callas and other stars, shows him the internet and leaves him with questions as troubling as the century was. The collection Voices of a Troubled Century is not a translation but an original work in English.

Brother Michael Bjørk is presently serving at the Danish Bethel

Sacred Origins of Profound Things
Author: Charles Panati Year Published: 1996 Is the author a Witness: No
Publisher: Penguin Books Pages: 594 ISBN: 0140195335

Few books in the theological literature are simply fun to read and this is one of them. Panati has written an informative and entertaining book on the origins of religious ideas, sacred items, worship practices, holy symbols, and holidays. Although he discusses wonderful puzzlements such as why Jews don't eat pork, he also explores the origins and history of more pressing, controversial, present-day concerns such as the bans on homosexuality, married priests, and birth control. Although it advertises itself as a book on world religions, the emphasis is mainly on Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, with only a smattering of other faiths.

Battles of the Bible
Author: Herzog & Gichon Year Published: 1997 Is the author a Witness: No
Publisher: Greenhill Books Pages: 320 ISBN: 1853672661

Battles Of The Bible presents a comprehensive survey of the wars of ancient Israel. The Bible's military accounts (told in vivid detail) cover a vast period, from the invasion of Canaan by the Israelites under Joshua's command, through the conquest of the kingdom by David and Solomon, and the split of the kingdom into Judah and Israel, to the Maccabees' successful rebellion against Seleucid domination. The reliability of these accounts is supported by their technical accuracy and by descriptions of topographic conditions peculiar to specific battlefields. They bear comparison with military campaigns well after the biblical era, and provide strategic and tactical lessons of value even today. Battles Of The Bible is a fascinating and valuable work, not only for its exacting scrutiny of biblical accounts, but also for its insight into their wider and continuing relevance. Battles Of The Bible is an importance contribution to Old Testament studies, biblical archaeology, and military history.
